Helmet labels identify compliance or certification under particular systems. Read the full designation and regional context before comparing two products.

DOT and FMVSS 218

DOT represents manufacturer self-certification under the US system. NHTSA conducts compliance testing of selected products rather than pre-approving each helmet. Use the complete label and product documentation when checking a US-market item.

ECE and Snell designations

Keep ECE amendment numbers and Snell years and suffixes in the record. Snell identifies M2025D and M2025R as distinct standards. A short label such as “Snell” omits information needed to identify the exact certification.

Regional and event context

Check the rules where the helmet will be used and any organizer’s equipment requirements. A specification on a foreign product page is not automatically the specification of the item in your shop. Similar regional model names should be checked individually. Before riding abroad, use our motorcycle helmet laws by country guide to check local helmet requirements and accepted standards.

Build an accurate record

Record model, size, regional label and source. Keep approval information separate from independent test ratings or comfort assessments. The detailed guide below explains the systems and how our catalog presents the evidence.
